How It Works

A fine, sterile probe is inserted into the hair follicle. A small electric current is applied, destroying the follicle’s ability to grow hair. Each hair is treated individually for ultimate accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis, also commonly referred to as electroepilation or electric epilation in some Eastern European countries, is a method of permanent hair removal that uses a fine probe inserted into the hair follicle. A small amount of electrical current is applied to treat the follicle and prevent future hair growth.

Electrolysis may use galvanic current, thermolysis/short-wave current, or a blend of both methods, depending on the treatment approach and the client’s needs.

Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis treats individual hair follicles one at a time. Laser uses light energy to target pigment in the hair and can reduce hair growth in a treatment area, but it does not treat each follicle individually.

This is why laser is commonly described as permanent hair reduction, while electrolysis is recognized as permanent hair removal.

Yes. Electrolysis is a safe and well-established procedure when performed by a trained professional using professional equipment such as the Apilus Senior 3G.

The number of sessions varies depending on the treatment area, hair type, previous hair removal methods, and individual goals. Most clients need multiple sessions to achieve the best results.

Yes. Electrolysis is effective on all skin tones and all hair colors, including white, blonde, red, and grey hair, unlike laser hair removal, which depends on pigment contrast.

Yes. Electrolysis is commonly used to remove hair from the upper lip, chin, eyebrows, and other delicate facial areas with precision and care.

Yes. We offer electrolysis treatments for men, including areas such as the back, chest, shoulders, and face.

Yes. Clients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) may benefit from regular electrolysis to help manage unwanted hair growth effectively.

Yes. We proudly support clients seeking gender-affirming hair removal. Electrolysis is often used as part of pre-surgical preparation and can also help achieve smooth, long-term results.

Please avoid shaving for at least 2–3 days before your scheduled appointment. We need enough visible hair to grip with tweezers during treatment.

Avoid waxing, plucking, or tweezing before and during your electrolysis treatment plan, as these methods remove hair from the root and can delay progress.

Please arrive with clean skin and avoid applying heavy creams, oils, or makeup to the treatment area before your appointment. Keeping your skin well hydrated before treatment may also help.

Detailed preparation and aftercare instructions will be provided before your first treatment and after each appointment.

Electrolysis can be used to treat unwanted hair on most areas of the face and body. Common treatment areas include the upper lip, chin, cheeks, eyebrows, neck, underarms, arms, hands, fingers, abdomen, bikini area, legs, feet, toes, ears, hairline, and other areas discussed during consultation.

Clients choose electrolysis for many reasons, including hormonal hair growth, excess facial or body hair, hair that cannot be treated effectively with laser, white, blonde, red, or gray hair, eyebrow shaping, hairline shaping, and gender-affirming hair removal.

Some treatment areas may require additional discussion before booking. Treatment suitability, timing, and pricing can be confirmed during consultation.

Your total treatment time depends on several factors, including:

  • Previous hair removal methods
  • Density of hair in your treatment area
  • Frequency of appointments

Hair grows in cycles: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Because of this, a series of treatments is needed to make progress. At any given time, the visible hair in a treatment area represents only a portion of the total hair growth in that area. The remaining hairs are in different stages of the growth cycle.

This is why it is important to avoid waxing, plucking, and tweezing during treatment. These methods remove hair from the root and can make it harder to see and treat the hair effectively, which may prolong the overall process.

With electrolysis, visible hairs can be treated effectively. The goal is not only to treat hair during a specific growth phase, but also to avoid interrupting the natural hair growth cycle with methods that pull the hair out at the root. Waxing may also stimulate hair growth in some cases.

You may feel a quick burst of heat with each treated hair. Most clients find the sensation tolerable, but please let your electrologist know if it feels too uncomfortable.

Pain tolerance varies from person to person. For clients who are more sensitive to discomfort, we recommend applying a topical anesthetic before the appointment.

In some cases, reducing the sensation too much may affect the effectiveness of the treatment.

Redness and swelling are normal after electrolysis treatment. Depending on the treatment method, treatment length, and your skin’s individual response, inflammation may last 1–4 days, especially after longer or more intensive sessions. Small pinpoint scabs may also appear. These are a normal part of the healing process and should be left undisturbed.

It is important to keep the treated area clean and avoid touching, picking, scratching, or irritating the skin after treatment.

Aftercare products such as witch hazel, tea tree oil, aloe vera gel, or medical-grade honey may be recommended depending on your skin’s needs. Medical-grade honey may help support a clean, protected healing environment.

Please keep your hands off the treated area and follow the aftercare instructions provided after your appointment.

We use the Apilus Senior 3G, a highly regarded professional electrolysis machine designed for precision, comfort, and effective permanent hair removal.
